It seems like during the month of January, you can find 'les galettes des rois' in every boulangerie and grocery store in France! It is eaten to celebrate Epiphany and we were invited to Helene and Richard's lovely home yesterday to enjoy it with friends. There is a little ceramic figurine (a fève) in each cake and whoever finds it, is king for the day and is supposed to buy the next cake. Apparently, most of France enjoys a cake made of flaky pastry with a dense almond center (called frangipane), but as usual, Provence does things a bit differently. Here, the galette des rois is a brioche with candied fruits on top, which reminded me of the rather unappealing fruitcake of years gone by.
We were thrilled to be invited to the Ferretti's home to toast to the New Year and celebrate this French tradition with new friends. Bucky found the first 'fève' which I took to be a good sign and we all enjoyed a wonderful afternoon. Bonne Annee!
