Last Thursday, after a three-day delay caused by airline cancellations due to the volcano in Iceland, my mom (lovingly known as Tutu by one and all) arrived in France...with our bird, Fred! Tutu spent weeks getting the paperwork prepared for Fred's transatlantic journey. She compleded multiple documents, made numerous calls and trips to the vet, and even had to travel to the USDA office in Columbia - twice! When they were finally ready to depart (Fred in a cute pink and brown small dog carrying case that my parents had tweeked for the journey), their flight was cancelled because of the ash over Europe.
After a number of frantic calls, they were rescheduled on a flight out of Charleston a few days later that took them to Atlanta, then through Montreal and to Paris. I made plans to take the train to Paris to meet Tutu and Fred at Charles de Gaulle aiport and escort them back to Provence on the TGV. After a few more normal travel delays, the weary travellers arrived from the states. I was thrilled to see them both! Tutu and I shared a picnic in the train station and we then boarded the train with lots of luggage and Fred. The trip was (luckily) uneventful and after reaching the Avignon TGV station and renting a car, we headed for home in Eygalieres.
Fred and Tutu were greeted by the Wall family and we all remarked at how well Fred had fared during the journey. She quickly got settled into her new cage and started to chirp! Welcome home, Fred! And thanks, Tutu, for taking such wonderful care of our dear bird!
