A bouchon

A bouchon is a type of restaurant in Lyon that serves traditional Lyonnaise food. When we went on our tour of Old Lyon a few weeks ago, our guide told us about bouchons and warned us that many places claim to be the real thing, but there are only a few authentic bouchons in Lyon. Our friends, Ines and Thierry, took us to such a place last week for dinner. It was a nice night out with adults only – Laure stayed home with the girls! On our way there, Ines and Thierry gave us a quick tour of the city which was wonderful for us to see – we certainly got a different perspective of it in the evening with all of the lights! It was really beautiful! When we got to the restaurant, Thierry explained the entire menu to Bucky which was lots of fun to watch! On Ines and Thierry’s recommendation, we decided to enjoy some of the traditional offerings including salade lyonnaise as a starter for Bucky and fish fillet for me as my main course. Bucky even finished his meal off with Saint Marcellin cheese (tres Lyonnais) and now one of Bucky’s favorite things!

The meal was delicious, but the atmosphere and company were really what made the evening so enjoyable. The ambience of the place was really warm and friendly, and we enjoyed spending time with Ines and Thierry. We laughed a lot about our language blunders, commiserated about having daughters and filled them in on some of my favorite to-dos in NYC. (They are headed there as a family in the spring!) It was a great night out and Bucky and I felt lucky to experience an authentic bouchon with our friends. Merci!
