The market was immense, situated on the river bank on either side of a large bridge. We went up and down one side of the market first, and then went under the bridge to look at the wares on the other side. We all agreed that we were no longer in South Carolina. The market was pure France...lots of bright, vivid colors in the stalls with fruits and vegetables…bright orange pumpkins, yellow melons, huge soft peaches and gorgeous raspberries. The smells were unique…fresh fish galore, tangy olives, and a multitude of sausages with various herbs and flavors. The people were impressive too…lots and lots of older women with rolling carts, haggling with the vendors over the fruit and veggies, many of the vendors trying to get passersby to purchase from them by yelling out the prices and bargains, and many smiling faces greeting each other with ‘bonjour’ and kisses.
Since we are moving out of the Defaix’s wonderful home this weekend, we didn’t want to buy too much, so we had to control ourselves. Bucky wanted some sausage which he bought on his own – en francais bien sur! He also bought some goat cheese and we got bread for our breakfast. We couldn’t resist the rotisserie chickens, so we bought one for our dinner tonight and I can’t wait! After the girls found a few clothes items that they couldn’t live without, we decided to head home happy and content which is right when the rain began to fall! It was cool and refreshing and a wonderful start to another beautiful day in France.
